At the time, it seemed like Van Wagenen probably wanted to ensure he didn’t tip his hand or make promises.
MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported that Betances will earn a $2.2 million for 2020 with a $5.3 million signing bonus.
The Mets, Van Wagenen said, would consider anything, but they felt good about their club.
Van Wagenen instead was aggressive in trying to improve the unit by signing Betances, a bounce-back candidate who is a four-time All-Star.
We’ll never know the answer, but by signing Betances, Van Wagenen tried to ensure the question isn’t asked again next season.
